1ère partie : "Le bateau de l'angoisse" (Ghost ship)...

Part 1: "Ghost ship"...

Ce film d'horreur essaie de relever le niveau "scénaristique" du genre et les décors sont très travaillés y compris la maquette du bateau - j'ai eu envie de faire cette épave flottante qui a des teintes intéressantes...

This horror movie tries to raise the "scenic" level of the genre, and the sets are very well done, including the model of the boat - I wanted to make this floating wreck, which has some interesting hues...

Au départ, il fallait un paquebot. J'ai trouvé le "Camberra", bien que trop moderne - le début du film se passe en 1962 - pour la forme générale...

Initially, we needed a liner. I found the "Camberra", although too modern - the movie begins in 1962 - for the general shape...

Ayant récupéré deux coques de cargo dans la boîte à surplus, la poupe de l'un d'eux allait remplacer avantageusement celle du "Camberra" pas assez arrondie...

Having salvaged two cargo hulls, the stern of one of them was to replace that of the "Camberra", which was not rounded enough...

Après découpe des deux poupes, ajustage de celle du cargo et collage. Bien que les deux navires ne soient pas à la même échelle, cela ne pose pas problème...

Après masticage et ponçage, la nouvelle poupe est en place... On ne tient pas compte de la partie inférieure qui sera invisible...

Le bâtiment en place sur son support de plâtre. La maquette d'origine a été modifiée pour se rapprocher au plus près du navire du film...

Les ponts du Camberra sont retravaillés, des chaloupes enlevées, tout le bastingage remplacé par de la photodécoupe. La cheminée double éliminée au profil de celle du cargo... Le plus gros travail de transformation se situant sur la moitié arrière du navire...

The decks of the "Camberra" are reworked, with some of the longboats removed, and all the railings replaced by photo-etching. The double chimney was eliminated in favor of the freighter's... The biggest transformation work was carried out on the stern half of the ship...

Peinture ghost ship

Le but n'étant pas de réaliser le paquebot du film au détail près mais d'effectuer un travail de peinture pour surtout retrouver l'effet "d'ambiance" et les couleurs du film, et d'innover un peu dans la maquette... Ici une dizaine de teintes Humbrol à l'huile ont été utilisées. Les premières couleurs sont pulvérisées à l'aérographe... On tient compte que les parties les plus abîmées sont les différents ponts exposés aux intempéries. On commence par du noir, puis de marron foncé vers le clair puis par des beige jusqu'à la teinte jaune sable...

The aim wasn't to produce the liner from the movie in exact detail, but to create a paint job that would, above all, recreate the "atmospheric" effect and colors of the film, and to innovate a little with the model... Here, a dozen Humbrol oil paints were used. The first colors are airbrushed... We take into account that the most damaged parts are the various decks exposed to the elements. Start with black, then dark brown to light, then beige to sandy yellow...

On continue au dry-brush les parties plus claires puis avec de l'ivoire et du blanc on pratique l'écaillage avec un pinceau très fin...

We dry-brush the lighter areas, then use ivory and white to flake off with a very fine brush...

Un jus final à base de Terre de Sienne, Terre d'Ombre et gris de Payne viendra compléter l'effet d'usure et d'ombrage...

Le bateau terminé. La mer est sculptée en plâtre de Paris et peinte à l'acrylique Liquitex. Les couleurs suivent l'ambiance du film...

Depuis, la scénette a reçu un fond peint à l'acrylique, et la peinture de la mer a également été retravaillée...

2ème partie :

Liberty-ship

Il y a quelques années, j'ai fait un diorama d'un Liberty-Ship torpillé et hélas, suite à un mauvais mélange de la résine - il y a vraiment eu naufrage et destruction car produit nocif quand il n'est pas stabilisé...

A few years ago, I made a diorama of a Liberty Ship that was torpedoed and, alas, due to the resin being badly mixed - it really was sunk and destroyed, as the product is noxious when not stabilized...

En premier lieu, le pont au niveau de la poupe du deuxième cargo est découpé puis cette partie ainsi que la coque complète passées au "Decapfour"... La vue montre le cargo avant découpe et décapage....

First, the stern deck of the second freighter is cut away, then this section and the entire hull are treated with "Decapfour" (a product used to clean the inside of furnaces)... View of the cargo ship before cutting and stripping....

Des morceaux récupérés ainsi que diverses pièces, mâts, bastingages, etc... allaient servir à reconstituer un nouveau "Liberty-Ship"...

La cheminée éliminée, servira pour le "Camberra", le canon de proue du "Liberty-Ship" coulé est passé à l'arrière sur la structure. Les mâts sont positionnés ainsi que les bastingages en photodécoupe. Une nouvelle cale est fabriquée en scratch...
La partie avant du "Liberty-Ship" avec la cale, torpillée n'existant plus, la partie arrière après le château central devient la partie avant - vous me suivez toujours ?

Mais le château central, n'étant pas dans le bon sens, le pont derrière lui est découpé et celui-ci recollé dans l'autre sens, ok?
Bon, après collage et masticage de tout ce bazar, voilà ce que ça donne avant peinture... La fumée c'est cadeau !

The eliminated chimney will be used for the "Camberra", while the bow gun from the sunken "Liberty-Ship" is passed aft on the structure. The masts are positioned, as are the photo-etched railings. A new bilge is scratchbuilt...
As the forward section of the "Liberty-Ship" with the torpedoed hold no longer exists, the aft section after the central castle becomes the forward section - are you still with me?


But as the central castle is not in the right direction, the deck behind it is cut out and glued back together in the other direction, ok?
Well, after gluing and puttying the whole mess, here's what it looks like before painting... The smoke is a gift!

La peinture du cargo terminée ainsi que les effets de vieillissement. On procède de même que pour le bateau fantôme en accentuant un peu moins l'usure... Détail des effets de couleur de la partie inférieure de la coque...

Le diorama s'intitulant "Rendez-vous dans l'Atlantique", un sous-marin devait rejoindre le navire...
Mais n'en ayant pas sous la main, je décidais de le construire avec des pièces de récupération. Notamment avec des bombes et réservoirs de carburant pour avion...

As the diorama was entitled "See you in the Atlantic", a submarine was to join the ship...
But I didn't have one to hand, so I decided to build it with salvaged parts. In particular, bombs and aircraft fuel tanks...

Premiers essais - pas de plongée mais... de mise en place !

Décor/résine

En premier lieu un panneau de bois qui reçoit un apprêt acrylique blanc pour éviter l'humidité puis une couche de noir...

First a wooden panel that receives a white acrylic primer to prevent moisture, then a coat of black...

On réalise un cadre avec un calendrier plastifié dont on enduit l'intérieur de vaseline pour faciliter le démoulage. On fixe le cadre sur le support à l'aide d'un scotch aluminium en veillant à bien colmater...

A frame is made from a plasticized calendar, the inside of which is coated with Vaseline to facilitate removal from the mold. Attach the frame to the support with aluminum tape, making sure to seal the holes...

On dépose une première couche de résine teintée au bleu. Pas plus de 3 - 4 mm...

A first layer of blue-tinted resin is applied. No more than 3 - 4 mm...

La première couche sèche, on pose le modèle en veillant à le stabiliser...

Once the first coat has dried, the model is laid down, stabilizing it...

Puis nouvelle couche teintée...

Then a new coat of tint...

On fixe alors le sous-marin à son tour et on continue les couches (24h entre chaque). Il faut veiller à vérifier le niveau de l'eau atteint sur les coques de navire et également placer le submersible à la bonne hauteur...

The submarine is then attached in turn and the layers continue (24 hours between each). Be sure to check the water level reached on the ship's hulls, and place the submersible at the right height...

Le diorama terminé a également été amélioré avec l'ajout d'un fond peint à l'acrylique...
