Conçu sur les bases de chassis des M48 PATTON et M60, la première version est entrée en service en 1961. Puis le M88A1 en 1977, puis le M88A2 en 2003...
Il s'est retrouvé sur beaucoup de théâtres d'opérations comme le Vietnam, le Golfe, Kosovo, Irak et Afghanistan. Utilisé notamment par d'autres pays comme Israël, l'Italie, l'Australie, l'Allemagne, etc...
Un des plus puissants engins du génie américain actuellement utilisé. Véritable atelier ambulant, il effectue les dépannages sur la ligne de feu et missions de récupération aussi bien qu'à l'arrière.
Blindage protégeant contre la mitraille d'armes légères, moyennes et fragments d'obus et mines antichar de 10kgs. Calibre 50mm en tourelleau à vision panoramique. 4 hommes d'équipage, conducteur et mécanicien sont assis à l'avant.
La lame dozer sert à stabiliser le véhicule en opération tandis que la potence peut soulever des moteurs. Il possède des barres de remorquages. Un groupe électrogène sert le treuil principal et peut prendre le relais en cas de panne de la lame dozer. Il assure l'entretien des M1 ABRAMS et véhicules similaires. A noter qu'il faut deux M88A1 pour tracter les 70T du M1 ABRAMS. Son moteur diesel lui permet une autonomie de 450km à 29km/h.
Comme la sèche, il peut produire un écran (de fumée) pour se protéger. Le système d'émission de fumée via les pots d'échappement lui permet de se camoufler. Comme les russes, on injecte du carburant dans l'échappement. Le carburant se vaporise et se mélange avec les gaz d'échappement des moteurs. Les vapeurs de carburant se refroidissent au contact de l'air ambiant et se condensent pour former un écran de fumée homogène...

Armor protects against grapeshot from light and medium weapons, as well as shell fragments and 10kg anti-tank mines. 50mm caliber turret with panoramic vision. 4-man crew, driver and mechanic are seated at the front.
The dozer blade is used to stabilize the vehicle in operation, while the jib can lift engines. It has towing bars. A generator serves the main winch and can take over in the event of dozer blade failure. It services M1 ABRAMS and similar vehicles. Two M88A1s are needed to tow the 70T of the M1 ABRAMS. Its diesel engine gives it a range of 450km at 29km/h.
Like the dry one, it can produce a screen (of smoke) to protect itself. The system of smoke emission via the exhaust pipes enables it to camouflage itself. Like the Russians, fuel is injected into the exhaust. The fuel vaporizes and mixes with the engine exhaust. The fuel vapors cool on contact with the surrounding air and condense to form a homogeneous smoke screen...
